This series will include three parts. Let the fun begin!
If you love beer like I do, then I know you will enjoy this series!
So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this read with your favorite beer of choice.
Here’s one of the topics that will be discussed.
I. Understanding your Palate
Ok, Let me first tell you that this is not a science class but I think it is important to give you a visual diagram of your palate. So, what is your palate? Scientifically, it is the roof of the mouth, separating the cavities of the nose and the mouth in vertebrates. For us beer lovers, it means a person’s appreciation of taste and flavor for beer. This is the first “important” step in understanding your palate. I remember having my first beer, the taste of the beer was ok. My second beer the taste was better. My third beer the taste was awesome. My palate was adjusting to each beer that I tasted. The palate diagram shows different palates of your mouth. Every new beer that you encounter for taste and flavor, your palate will adjust.
As beer lovers and connoisseurs, we have to diversify our palates. This is the ultimate goal of understanding your palate and truly enjoying many beers in our lives. To test your palate, I challenge you to finding three beers to taste. Review the palate diagram, and try to determine how your palate is adjusting to the flavor of the beer. You will be surprised how wonderful it is to diversify your palate!!
Also, if you were wondering what my first beer was, I will give you a hint it starts with a capital “B”..lol
I. The Science of Tasting
Now, that you understand your palate and what it is. Let’s have some fun with the “Science of Tasting”. Uh oh, there goes that science word again. I promise this is not a science lesson..lol. However, just like there is a science to tasting wine, the same applies to beer. You may have read several articles talking about the science of tasting wine. You may have also read other articles that talk about the science of tasting beer. What I want to share with you is that you do not have to be a scientist to enjoy either. Only “one” simple rule applies. “Your sense of smell and taste is truly the determining factor whether or not the beer is to your liking”. Smell is an important part of the drinking beer experience when drinking from a glass. Raise your hand! How many of you smell your beer? When I was in college, my friends and I would buy a 12 pack of beer, pop the cap and go for it! We never thought about pouring our beer in a glass and smelling the beer. I mean NEVER! This is why I think, there is a science to tasting beer. When you go to your next brewery visit, ask for a sample of their beers. Smell the beers. The first thing that you will find out is that not all beers smell alike. This prepares you mentally to taste and enjoy the flavor of the beer.
