My first trip to San Francisco was in 2012. I was attending an Oracle Conference and staying at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins.
I fell in love with this glamorous city that has so much to offer and things to do! I tasted several beers while I was there and I was thoroughly impressed.
If you are planning a future trip to San Francisco, here’s my top 3 beers you need to try while enjoying your visit to this glamorous city. Also, I recommend staying at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins. This hotel has awesome views of the city from their restaurant at “The Top of The Mark“.

Pliny the Elder – Russian River Brewing
Pliny the Elder is number 1 on my list of top beers in San Francisco. This West Coast Double IPA is brewed with perfection. It is well-balanced with malt, hops, and alcohol, slightly bitter with a fresh hop aroma of floral, citrus, and pine. Best enjoyed FRESH! The Actual bottling date is printed on each bottle! The taste is smooth and refreshing with no aftertaste. It’s a little expensive but worth every penny. The alcohol content is 8.0 percent.
Five Pounds Hazy IPA –Seven Stills Brewery
Five Pounds Hazy IPA is full of flavor! The flavors you get from Five Pounds are bright and tropical, heavily reminiscent of fresh squeezed orange juice, mango’s, guava… you name it! It’s everything people want from a hazy IPA, but without having to stand in line for 4 hours. Highly recommend this one! Alcohol content is 6.7 percent.
Anchor Steam – Anchor Brewing
This is the first beer I tasted in San Francisco. You cannot leave San Francisco without at least trying this classic tradition. Anchor Steam has a deep amber color, thick, creamy head, and rich, distinctive flavor to a historic brewing process like none other. I highly recommend ordering this delicious beer and enjoying the beautiful view at the Top of the Mark in the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins Hotel. Trust me, you will not be disappointed! Alcohol content is 4.9 percent.
